Celebrating 10 years of the Southland Warm Homes Trust

Celebrating 10 years of the Southland Warm Homes Trust

Winter is undoubtedly a more arduous time of year. As lower temperatures set in, the idea of being cosy inside your home becomes more and more appealing. Unfortunately, a warm and healthy home to live in throughout the winter is something many Southland families don’t have. For the past 10 years, the Southland Warm Homes Trust has been committed to seeing as many homes as it can come up to standard to keep our community warm and healthy.

The vision of the trust is to ensure Southlanders have a more energy efficient home, an improved living environment, improved well-being, better health, and greater energy efficiency awareness. Great strides have been made toward this mandate and in 2015 the trust celebrated insulating its 5000th home. It was a fantastic achievement, but the work isn’t over yet.

Being healthy is one our biggest assets; when we’re sick, we can’t work which affects income. When incomes are compromised, the prospect of paying for winter power bills can seem quite daunting. If we can help people to be healthy in their homes by making sure they’re warm and well-ventilated, then this helps to ease those power bills. We’ve worked with many families in Southland to help them pay for insulation, a heat pump, a wood pellet burner and other various methods to ensure a warm home.

Since its inception, the trust raised more than $15 million. Research tells us that for every $1 spent on insulation, there is a $5.20 return on investment back to the local economy and the Government (who provide funding for the trust). This is because by providing warm and insulated homes, it reduces the needs for hospital requirements and taking time off from work or school. We’re looking forward to the next 10 of the trust’s operations, continuing to make healthy homes for Southland.

If you’re in a home, whether it’s a rental or one you own, that isn’t warm and healthy, the Southland Warm Homes Trust can help. Working with Awarua Synergy, there are several different subsidies available. Check out the Awarua Synergy website for more information to see how you can apply for funding to warm up your home.
